The importance of correct tyre pressure
The correct tyre pressure is vital for both safety and for extending the life of your tyre.
You should check your tyre pressures monthly, including the spare and before any long distance driving. Make sure the tyre pressures match the pressures recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
Tyre pressures should if possible be checked cold. If tyre pressures are checked hot, add 4 to 5 psi (0.3 bar) to the recommended pressures.
In the case of unusual pressure loss, the internal and external condition of the tyre should be checked, as well as the condition of the wheel and valve.
Get a grip on tyre pressures!
Maximum grip on the road is vital for road safety. This can only be achieved with the correct pressure in your tyres. The diagram below shows how much grip a tyre has on the road depending on its pressure.
Tyre pressures - top tips
1 - Safety
Under inflated tyres can not only overheat increasing the chances of it bursting, but also lead to poor handling of your vehicle. Low pressure on the front axle will increase under steer (fig. 1) whereas low pressure on the rear axle will increase over steer (fig. 2).

fig.2 Over steer
2 - Economy
Over inflated and under inflated tyres suffer more damage than those with the correct pressure and need to be changed more often. Even 60% inflation, which is not uncommon, can increase tyre wear and significantly shorten the life of the tyre. Vehicles with under inflated tyres have increased rolling resistance that requires more fuel to maintain the same speed.
3 - Environment
Correct tyre pressure helps to maintain optimum fuel efficiency. This equates to lower CO2 emissions from your vehicle and helps protect the environment.

What our customers think
“I have had dealings with Tadley Tyres twice recently and both times their customer service has been outstanding. First my Wifes car's battery failed when we were in the supermarket car park next to Tadley Tyres on a Sunday morning. Barry from Tadley Tyres happened to be in the garage and gave us a jump start and would not accept any payment. We were stranded 6 miles from home and we have now christened him St. Barry of Tadley. Secondly I took a wheel in to investigate what I thought was a slow puncture. It turned out to be a loose valve core which was tightened up and all is well. - No Charge. I can't recommend these guys enough.”
“Absolutely fabulous! Cannot recommend enough. From the beginning to the end this garage has gone way beyond the call of duty to help me out. I was taken to them by the recovery services and they fixed my exhaust and because that didnt solve the problem, found out what was wrong and then assisted me to get it to the Mitsubishi garage where it had to have specialist mechanical work. I was away in Yorkshire at the time so they arranged everything for me and helped me with my transportation problems and all with a happy cheerful manner. It would have been a nightmare without their help and is very appreciated. I will in future be buying all my tyres from them in future as I have since found their tyre prices to be extremely reasonable. Thank you Tadley Tyres! Catherine ”
“Always top service from the guys at Tadley Tyres! I never go anywhere else to get my new tyres now. ”
